2003. Dir: Len Wiseman. With: Kate Beckinsale, Scott
Speedman, Michael Sheen, Shane Brolly.
The narrator, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is a vampire “death
dealer”, a warrior in the ancient war between vampires and lycans (werewolves).
She and her fellow “death dealers” spot some lycans
and track them into a subway. The werewolves fire at the vampires, one of Selene’s fellow “death dealers”
is killed by a UV bullet, and then another. She follows the werewolves into the subway tunnels and stumbles upon a room full
of Lycans.
When our Selene arrives back to the mansion where all the local
vampires reside, she informs the head honcho vampire, Kraven (Shane Brolly), that something is amiss and that she wants to
investigate. However, Kraven is too intent on power to be arsed with such matters.
Selene discovers the Lycans were after a human named, Michael
Corvin (Scott Speedman). She searches for Corvin, but he gets bitten by a lycan leader, Lucian (Michael Sheen). The reason
he bites Michael is to get a sample of his blood, which is supposedly able to take a mixture of the lycan and vampire strains
without dying. Selene works out what is going on, and decides to wake an elder vampire, Victor (Bill Nighy), early. Victor
is more than a bit miffed at this, but once he realises why she did it, he lets her off as long as she agrees to kill Corvin.
Things get complicated as Selen as taken a bit of a shine to
Corvin. After learning some secrets about Victor (the little fact he’d forgotten to mention, that he was responsible
for the slaughter of her family, that sort of thing) Selene kinda switches sides. The reason victor is so miffed about the
lycans is that one once bedded his daughter, a vampire some time back, so he killed her (nice guy!) These too races are not
too chuffed about mixed marriages apparently!
Things have come sort of full circle, as Selene is so taken
with Corvin that she wants to get to know him a little better (if you know what I mean!)
Kate Beckkinsale is excellent in the role of Selene, and when
she’s dressed in that PVC outfit and firing off rounds - she is as sexy as fuck! Forgive my French, there!
In fact she must have got a taste for vampires and werewolves
during this movie, as she has recently appeared in Van Helsing, and is
also lined up to reprise her role in Underworld 2. Can’t wait!
