1979 Dir: Ridley Scott With: Tom Skerrit, Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Harry Dean-Stanton.

The crew of spaceship Nostromo are awoken from a long sleep to investigate signals from a nearby planet.

They discover a wrecked alien spacecraft and what look like eggs. John Hurt makes the mistake of peering into one of the eggs and gets a baby alien (a sort of cross between a spider and a crab) attached to his face.

Back on the ship, they try to remove it, and saw through one of its legs. They discover that the thing has green acid for blood, which burns through the floor. 'It's got a great defence mechanism - you don't dare kill it,' one of the crewmembers observes.

Once the thing has been removed, the crew are sat round eating when John Hurt gives birth to an alien (when it bursts out of his chest and then shoots off at the speed of the roadrunner bird from the Wiley Coyote cartoons!)

The remaining members of the crew are then picked off one by one, and during the course of the film we discover that one of them is in fact an android.

Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is eventually the only remaining crew member and does battle with the now fully grown alien creature. And what does our Miss Weaver do to prepare herself for battle? Yes, that's right, she does what any self-respecting woman would do for a confrontation with a gigantic alien monster - she strips! Right down to her vest and panties!

There were three sequels: the brilliant Aliens, where Ripley does battle with one of the alien's even bigger relatives, Alien3 and Alien Resurrection.
